Awesome Snowflakes

I love winter. Crazy, eh?

Lately my friends have started to call me Flakey. Maybe because I love to stand outside for hours on end, working from an outhouse tent, looking at awesome snowflakes. After 20 winters, I can honestly say that no two flakes are alike. I hope you feel the coolness of these images. LOL. Remember to click on the thumbnails of the little flakes to view the BIG flakes.

Are these pictures of real snowflakes? Yup, they are. And they’ve sold many times–A French fashion designer even printed my snowflakes on silk scarves.

Here is a link to my Real Snowflakes video, set to relaxing music.

Let it snow! Cheers,

Marion Owen, Kodiak, Alaska, photographer

PS If your area produces awesome flakes, let me know. I might come visit!

The center “eye” in this split star is the connecting column which joins two partial, or split crystals. Here’s the theory: The two plates start out symmetrical, but as soon as one edges ahead, it starves the other of water vapor and retards or alters its growth. The asymmetrical results can be quite beautiful.
