The Secret to a Lower-Maintenance Garden

Let me ask you…

How does gardening feel for you these days?

Be honest.

Do you head out to the garden excited to see what’s happening?

Or does part of you feel a little overwhelmed by a to-do list that never seems to end?

You might relate to what Marilyn said when I asked her how things were going.

“It’s hard to stay on top of everything!”

Why Gardening Sometimes Feels So Hard

It’s not just the chores. It’s the surprises that can take the wind out of your sails…

One day, it’s the weeds.

The next day, the Aphid Army shows up.

Before you know it, your soil feels worn out.

And let’s not forget the weather. A heat wave hits…

Suddenly, you feel like you’re back to square one.

Anyone can start a garden.

But starting and maintaining a garden that makes you happy—a garden you enjoy spending time in, one that practically takes care of itself?

That’s an art.

How Charlie’s Improved His Clay Soil and Grew Better Garlic

One of my longtime students, Charlie, once told me that before he understood how to fix his clay soil, he could never grow garlic successfully.

Ever.

Today, he sent me a photo of a beautiful clump of just-harvested, softneck garlic.

He sounded like a proud parent.

“This garlic is grown in a heavy clay area. Only possible after years of improving my soil.”

What he was doing now was working.

Gardening had become much easier for Charlie.

Less watering. Less weeding. Less over-fussing with plants…

Healthy Soil Makes Gardening Easier

That’s what I want for you.

Not just a garden that works.

But a garden that doesn’t require so much work from you.

One thing I’ve learned in my 40+ years of gardening:

Your garden doesn’t need to run you ragged.
